Heather’s influences on her work include traditional and contemporary Maori art and crafts especially weaving which was and is still predominantly the realm of Maori women.
By focussing on women’s craft this exhibition of work honours the significant role women play in Maori society. Heather also believes that listening to the voices of our women can help lead us on to a more positive future for our community.
While the works exhibited here have an obvious relationship to traditional Maori art and craft, the influences of cubism are also present and pay homage to Heather’s European ancestry. These influences combined with traditional Maori art forms have produced works of unique originality.
