Richard Ruegg was born in Auckland in 1973. He gained a Visual Art degree from Auckland University of Technology (AUT) in 1995.
In 1999, Richard completed a postgraduate diploma at Elam School of Art focusing on the studio practice of painting. He also completed a postgraduate diploma in Art and Design at AUT in 2006. Since then Richard has lived in Japan, China and Germany developing his painting practice.
His most recent work searches for what may already be there in a painting, yet only visible once the surface has been worked, reworked and stripped back. These abstracts are a direct attempt to enter a meditative state that one may also experience through contemplation with our natural environment. In particular, what one may experience from being in a Japanese zen garden.
