Judy Woods graduated from Otago School of Fine Arts in 1985 and taught Art in secondary schools for 15 years.
Fitting her own work into spare time while teaching and raising a family, Judy decided two years ago, to devote herself full-time to painting. She paints intuitively, without planning, just responding to what she sees before her. Judy’s paintings begin with an exploration into the juxtaposition of differences and opposites.
Building layer upon layer in response to marks, colours, shapes and passages that resonate with her. The surface relief suggests history as collage is added, and photo transfers are applied. Judy is excited by unpredictable combinations of the accidental and intentional, laboured and free marks in paint and mixed media.
