Born and bred in beautiful Northland, Hope Gibbons is a contemporary New Zealand painter. Jody Gibbons is her given name, but she uses her family name (Hope Gibbons) as her artist signature to honour the passing of her father.
Hope has completed several Mastery Contemporary Painting courses in Auckland. In both 2013 and 2014 she won the Abstract Award at the Waitakere Trust’s Sculpture & Arts Awards. She has also been featured in lifestyle publications such as “NZ Life & Leisure” magazine. She has exhibited works both nationally and overseas.
Her current body of works explores the materiality of paint – it pushes the boundaries of traditional painting practice and techniques. It exploits the use of paint, rust, inks, leaf and varnish. This work is ever-changing and currently becoming bolder, colourful and more gestural, however recurring references back to the land are now becoming evident.
